Awarded to the best work of fiction published in the year preceding the year of the award. After beginning with one winner, three categories and an overall winner were introduced for the 1994 award; Picture Book, Short Novel and Long Novel. These were revised for the 2002 award to: Books for Younger Children; Books for Younger Readers; and Books for Older Readers.

The winner is chosen by nominations from children throughout the UK - entries are not required.

The winner receives a trophy for the year and a silver acorn to keep. Each category winner receives a silver bowl and every shortlisted author receives a portfolio of children's work.
