This award began in 2000 and is in memory of two very important figures in the children's book world, both of whom died of cancer in 1999. Henrietta Branford was a talented, award-winning children's novelist, and Wendy Boase, a passionate children's book editor who was co-founder and editiorial director of Walker Books.

Peters are co-sponsors of the award, along with Jacqueline Wilson and Walker Books. Awarded to an outstanding debut novel for children, this annual prize is presented in either June or July, with the winner receiving £1,000 and a unique, hand-crafted, silver-inlaid box. The editor of the winning book also receives a hand-crafted, silver-inlaid box in recognition of encouraging new talent.
